Apple Pay is live in India on Axis Bank credit cards. Your rewards do not change.
Apple Pay launched in India on 30 September 2026 with Axis Bank Visa and Mastercard credit cards. Axis says every Apple Pay purchase earns the same EDGE Rewards and cashback as the physical card. Here is which cards work, the two settings to switch on, and what it means abroad.

If you have an iPhone and an Axis Bank credit card, you can now tap your phone at the counter instead of your card. Apple Pay went live in India on 30 September, and Axis is the only bank on it.
The question that matters for anyone chasing points is whether paying this way earns less. Axis has answered it on its own Apple Pay page: it does not.
Rewards are the same as the physical card
Axis's FAQ is direct:
Every Apple Pay purchase earns the same EDGE Reward points, cashback, and card benefits as a physical card purchase, at your card's standard reward rate. Apple Pay is simply a different way to present your Axis Bank Credit Card. The underlying card and its benefits remain unchanged.
"Standard reward rate" here means whatever your card normally earns on that purchase, not a lower base rate. The same answer says the card's benefits remain unchanged.
That follows from how Apple Pay works. It does not load money into a separate wallet. It stores a token that stands in for your card number, and the payment still goes from your card to the merchant. The merchant's category code travels with it, so a restaurant still codes as a restaurant and an airline as an airline.
Two consequences:
- Accelerated categories still apply. Whatever your card earns at that merchant with the plastic, it earns with the phone.
- Excluded categories stay excluded. Fuel, rent, insurance and the other spends your card earns nothing on earn nothing through Apple Pay either. Changing how you present the card does not change what the merchant is.
Worth knowing
Card terms often exclude "wallet" spends from rewards. That means loading money into a prepaid wallet such as Paytm or Amazon Pay. Apple Pay is not a wallet load: you are paying the merchant with your card, which is why Axis counts it as a normal purchase.

Which cards work
Axis says Apple Pay is available on all Axis Bank Visa and Mastercard credit cards. That covers Atlas, Magnus, Reserve, Olympus and Select, as long as your copy is on Visa or Mastercard.
What does not work yet:
- RuPay cards. If your Axis card carries the RuPay logo, Wallet will not accept it.
- Debit cards. Credit cards only at launch.
- UPI. Apple Pay in India is card-only for now.
- Other banks. HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank and SBI Card are not on it. Reuters reported that Apple is still negotiating terms with them, and no date has been announced.
You need an iPhone on iOS 18 or later, an Apple Watch on watchOS 11 or later, or an iPad on iPadOS 18 or later. Axis's terms say Mac is not supported yet.
Switch on two settings first, or the payment fails
Apple Pay obeys the usage controls on your card, and many people have these switched off. Before you try it at a shop, open the Axis Mobile Banking app and go to Manage Usage Limits:
- Turn on Tap and Pay for payments in shops.
- Turn on Online Shopping for payments in apps and on websites.
Your Apple Pay limit is the same as the contactless limit on your physical card, and you set it in the same place. If a larger payment is declined, check that limit before blaming the terminal.
There is no fee. Axis says there is no setup charge, transaction charge or annual charge for Apple Pay.
Expect it to fail at some counters
Apple Pay works on any terminal that accepts contactless cards, in principle. In practice, early reports say it can go through at one terminal and fail at another, even in shops that take contactless cards. Keep the physical card on you for now.
If your phone shows "Done" but the cashier says the payment failed, do not pay again straight away. Check the Axis SMS or the transaction list in the app first. Axis sends an alert for every approved and every declined Apple Pay payment.
Using it abroad
Apple Pay with an Axis card works overseas wherever you see the Apple Pay or contactless symbol. Your card's normal foreign currency markup still applies, because the card underneath is the same.
One trap carries over from the physical card. If a foreign terminal offers to charge you in rupees, say no and pay in the local currency. Since 28 August, Axis charges 3.5% for that rupee conversion on the Select card and 2% on Magnus. We covered that change in our piece on Axis's transfer partner cuts.
New card not arrived yet
You can add a new Axis card to Apple Pay as soon as it shows in the Mobile Banking app, before the plastic reaches you. Until it arrives, Axis limits it to online payments of up to ₹5,000 each. Add-on cardholders can add their own card with their own app login.
What to do
- Check the network logo on your Axis card. Visa or Mastercard can be added today. RuPay cannot.
- Turn on Tap and Pay and Online Shopping in Manage Usage Limits before you try it.
- Add the card from the Axis app or from Wallet, and complete the OTP or in-app verification.
- Pay the way you would anyway. Your points depend on where you shop, not on whether you tap a phone or a card.
- Keep the physical card with you until acceptance settles down.
Common questions
Do I earn fewer EDGE Reward points with Apple Pay?
No. Axis says every Apple Pay purchase earns the same EDGE Reward points, cashback and card benefits as a physical card purchase.
Does Apple Pay count as a wallet spend that earns no rewards?
No. Wallet exclusions cover loading money into prepaid wallets. Apple Pay pays the merchant from your card directly, and Axis treats it as a normal card purchase.
Can I use HDFC, ICICI or SBI cards with Apple Pay in India?
Not yet. Axis Bank is the only issuer at launch. The other large banks are reported to be negotiating, with no date announced.
Is there a charge for using Apple Pay?
No. Axis says there is no setup fee, transaction fee or annual charge.
Why was my Apple Pay payment declined?
The most common reason is that Tap and Pay, or Online Shopping for app and web payments, is switched off in Manage Usage Limits in the Axis app. The other is that the amount is above your card's contactless limit, which Apple Pay shares.
