Until now the movie offer on a mid-range Axis card was one of the easiest benefits in Indian credit cards to use. Book two tickets, apply a code, the second one is free. No spend target, no enrolment.

From 1 November that changes on four cards. Axis's revision notices for Select, Privilege and MY ZONE each carry the same line:

To be eligible for the "Buy one get one" free District offer, you need to spend INR 25,000 in the previous 3 months.

Neo's notice applies the same ₹25,000 condition to its BookMyShow discount. The offers themselves do not change. What changes is who gets them.

Key takeaway

From 1 November, the movie offer on these four cards only works if ₹25,000 settled on the card in the previous three calendar months. For November that means August, September and October. If you are short, the next two weeks decide it.

What each card loses

CardMovie offerMost it is worth
Axis SelectSecond ticket free on District, up to ₹250, twice a month₹500 a month
Axis PrivilegeSecond ticket free on District, up to ₹250, once a month₹250 a month
Axis MY ZONESecond ticket free on District, up to ₹200 a month₹200 a month
Axis Neo10% off BookMyShow tickets, up to ₹100 a month₹100 a month

The ₹25,000 is the same on every card, which makes it a much harder bar for some than others. Spread over a year it is about ₹1 lakh. Measured against what the offer pays back over the same three months:

CardOffer over 3 monthsAs a share of ₹25,000
Axis Selectup to ₹1,5006%
Axis Privilegeup to ₹7503%
Axis MY ZONEup to ₹6002.4%
Axis Neoup to ₹3001.2%

Those are best cases. They assume you use the offer every time it is available and that each free ticket is worth the full cap.

If you already put about ₹8,400 or more a month on the card, nothing changes for you. The people this hits are the ones who kept the card for movies and paid for everything else with a different card. MY ZONE in particular has been sold on the movie offer. Axis's own page for the card counts ₹2,400 a year from District in the benefits it advertises, and that ₹2,400 now comes with a condition worth about ₹1 lakh a year of spend.

Which three months count

Axis's notice says only transactions settled during the preceding 3 calendar months count. Read literally, that is a rolling check:

To use the offer inYour spend must settle in
NovemberAugust, September, October
DecemberSeptember, October, November
JanuaryOctober, November, December

Two details in the notice change how you plan around this.

Settlement, not purchase. Axis says settlement can take up to five working days after the transaction. A purchase on 29 October may settle in November and count towards December, not November. If you are close to ₹25,000 for November, make the last purchases by about 22 October, and earlier if a bank holiday falls in the last week.

EMI counts by instalment. A ₹30,000 phone on a 12 month EMI does not clear the bar. Only the instalment billed in each statement cycle counts, so that phone adds about ₹2,500 a month.

What counts towards the ₹25,000

The notice is short on this. It says payments towards interest, fees, charges, reversals and refunds do not count, and that only the billed EMI instalment counts.

It does not list rent, fuel, wallet loads, utilities, insurance or gift cards as excluded. That matters because Axis did exclude all of those categories from the Select card's ₹3 lakh milestone from 1 October, in a separate line of the same Select notice. On the wording as published, they appear to count towards the movie threshold. Check the eligible spend figure in the Axis mobile app or net banking, which the notice says will show it, before you rely on that.

Two more rules from the notice:

  • Spends are counted at account level. Axis does not spell out what that covers, but it should include add-on cards on the same account.
  • New cards get a grace period. The requirement is waived for the month the card is issued and the next three calendar months. Upgrading from one Axis card to another does not count as a new card and does not reset this. Taking a second Axis card alongside one you already hold does count as a new card.

What to do

  1. Open the Axis mobile app or net banking and check your billed spend for August and September on the card.
  2. If you are short of ₹25,000 for November, decide whether the offer is worth moving spend for. On Select it can be worth ₹500 a month. On Neo it is ₹100.
  3. If you are moving spend, do it by about 22 October so it settles in October.
  4. If you never get near ₹25,000 on the card, stop counting the movie offer when you decide whether the card is worth its annual fee.

The rest of the same notices

The movie change is one of several dates in Axis's revision notices for these cards.

  • 28 August. The markup when you choose to pay in rupees on a foreign website or terminal (dynamic currency conversion) went from 1.5% to 3.5% on all four cards. The late payment fee on an outstanding balance of ₹50,000 or more rose to ₹1,300. Tolls and road and bridge fees stopped earning reward points.
  • 1 October, Select only. Spends in categories that do not earn reward points no longer count towards the ₹3 lakh annual milestone for 6 extra international lounge visits, 6 golf rounds and the Priority Pass renewal.
  • 15 November, Select only. Complimentary memberships linked to the card will renew only if you explicitly consent.

Common questions

Does this affect Axis Magnus, Reserve or Olympus?

No. Their revision notices, and those for Magnus for Burgundy and Primus, do not include the ₹25,000 movie condition.

Is the offer itself changing?

No. The caps and codes stay the same: AXISSELECT, AXISPRIVILEGE and AXIS200 on District, and the payment page discount on BookMyShow for Neo. Only eligibility changes.

I got my card in September. Does this apply to me?

Not yet. The requirement is waived for the month of issue and the next three calendar months, so a card issued in September is covered until the end of December.

Do movie tickets count towards the ₹25,000?

The notice does not exclude them, so they should count like any other settled purchase. Axis's MY ZONE page says movie transactions do not earn reward points, which is a separate rule.

Where do I see whether I qualify?

Axis says eligible spends can be viewed through billed transactions in net banking and the mobile app.
