Paytm AU credit card: free family lounge access, but only on flights you book on Paytm

Paytm and AU Small Finance Bank pitch a lifetime free RuPay card with family lounge access and up to 5% back. AU's own terms say the lounges are domestic, tied to Paytm flight bookings, that cabs and IRCTC earn nothing, and that bills only earn inside the Paytm app. What it is really worth.

On 21 October, Paytm and AU Small Finance Bank announced the Paytm AU credit card as India's first card with family lounge access. It is a RuPay card with no joining fee and no annual fee, and it pays up to 2% on Paytm UPI and 5% on Paytm Travel and Paytm Gold.

AU's own product page and reward terms add the conditions the launch left out. The lounges are domestic only and come with flight bookings made on Paytm. Every reward rate assumes you redeem for Paytm Gold. And several everyday categories, including cab rides and train tickets, earn nothing at all.

What the card gives you

SpendReward pointsWorth, redeemed as Paytm GoldWorth, redeemed anywhere else
Paytm Travel, Paytm Gold5 per ₹1005%2.5%
Paytm UPI, ₹100 to ₹2,000 a payment2 per ₹1002%1%
Paytm UPI, above ₹2,000 a payment1 per ₹1001%0.5%
Card spends online or in shops1 per ₹1001%0.5%
UPI through GPay, PhonePe or any other app1 per ₹400, payments above ₹400 only0.25%0.125%

AU's FAQ sets the value of a point at ₹1 when you redeem it for Paytm Gold and ₹0.50 for anything else. So the headline 5% and 2% are Paytm Gold numbers. If you redeem points through AU's rewards portal instead, halve them.

You can earn at most 3,000 points in a statement cycle across every category combined. At 2% on Paytm UPI that is ₹1.5 lakh of spend, so very few people will hit it.

A payment has to be at least ₹100 to earn anything. The card has no joining or annual fee. Forex payments carry a 3.49% markup, and unpaid balances are charged 3.75% a month (45% a year), per AU's fee schedule.

Key takeaway

The 2% and 5% only hold if you pay through the Paytm app and redeem for Paytm Gold. Pay over GPay or PhonePe and the same UPI spend earns 0.25%.

The lounge access, read closely

The launch line is up to 12 lounge visits a year for up to four family members together. AU's product page sets the rules:

  • Domestic airports only.
  • Only with a return flight booked through Paytm Travel in the Paytm app, with a round trip value of at least ₹5,000.
  • Entry is by QR code, generated in the Paytm app after the booking. Once you generate a QR, it cannot be cancelled or reversed.
  • At most 4 lounge visits per booking.
  • 12 visits in total. Paytm says these are for the year and can be used by up to four family members travelling together.

So the 12 visits are a shared pool, not 12 each. A family of four that uses all four visits on one booking gets three trips' worth of lounges a year. A couple using two visits per trip gets six.

AU's page also says that the minimum round trip value "for generating 1 Lounge QR is ₹5,000". It does not say whether each additional QR on the same booking needs another ₹5,000. If you are booking for a family, ask AU before you rely on all four.

Watch out

The lounge benefit has no value on flights booked on an airline's own site, on MakeMyTrip, or on any other app. If Paytm's fare is higher than the cheapest one you can find, the lounge visit is costing you the difference.

What earns nothing

AU's reward terms exclude these merchant categories entirely:

CategoryExamples
TransportationTaxis and cabs, metro and local transport, railways (IRCTC), buses, tolls, parking
Utilities, unless paid in the Paytm appMobile and broadband recharges, DTH, electricity, water
FuelPetrol pumps
Rent, education, insurance, government paymentsRent, school and college fees, premiums, taxes
Wallet loadsLoading any prepaid wallet

Two of these clash with how the card is marketed. Paytm's launch article gives cab rides as an example of UPI spends that earn up to 2%, but cabs (MCC 4121) are on AU's exclusion list.

Bills are the other one, and here the route decides it. AU's product page says utility bill payments made through the Paytm app earn 1 point per ₹100, while its reward terms exclude telecom and utility merchant codes. Read together, pay your electricity bill or mobile recharge inside the Paytm app and you earn 1%; pay the same bill on the provider's site or another app and you earn nothing.

Fuel gets a 1% surcharge waiver on fill ups of ₹400 to ₹4,000, up to ₹100 a month, but fuel earns no points.

What it is worth in a normal month

These use the Paytm Gold value of a point. For anything else, halve the result.

Monthly spendPointsValue a monthValue a year
₹8,000 of small Paytm UPI payments + ₹4,000 on the card200₹200₹2,400
The same, but UPI paid through GPay or PhonePeabout 60about ₹60about ₹720
₹15,000 of small Paytm UPI payments + ₹10,000 on the card400₹400₹4,800

The middle row is the one most people should look at. Moving your UPI payments to Paytm is what makes this card worth having. The second row assumes most of the ₹8,000 is in payments above ₹400; small payments below ₹400 on other apps earn nothing.

Because the card is lifetime free, any of these is money you would not otherwise get. The question is whether you are willing to use Paytm for UPI and hold your rewards as Paytm Gold.

Worth knowing

Paytm Gold is digital gold. Its price includes GST, and there is a gap between the price you buy at and the price you can sell at. Part of the 5% on Paytm Gold purchases goes back into that, and the value of the gold you redeem into moves with the gold price.

Who should apply

  1. Apply if you already pay most of your UPI through Paytm in amounts under ₹2,000. You will earn 2% on spending you are doing anyway, with no fee.
  2. Apply if your family flies domestic round trips a few times a year and you are willing to book them on Paytm, after checking the fare against other apps.
  3. Skip it if you use GPay or PhonePe for UPI and do not want to switch. At 0.25%, it earns less than most cards' base rate.
  4. Skip it if your main spends are cabs, train tickets or fuel. None of those earn points.
  5. Whatever you decide, link the card to the Paytm app and pay over Paytm UPI, not other apps. Pay bills and recharges inside the Paytm app too. Redeem your points for Paytm Gold, not anywhere else.

Common questions

Is the card really lifetime free?

Yes. AU's product page lists it as lifetime free, with no joining or annual fee.

Are the 12 lounge visits per person?

No. Paytm describes up to 12 visits a year for up to four family members together, and AU caps a single booking at four visits.

Does lounge access work on international flights?

No. AU's page says complimentary domestic airport lounge access.

What is a reward point worth?

₹1 when redeemed for Paytm Gold, ₹0.50 for anything else, according to AU's FAQ.

Do Uber, Ola or IRCTC payments earn rewards?

AU's reward terms exclude taxis and cabs (MCC 4121) and railways (MCC 4112), so expect nothing on them, even through Paytm UPI.

How do I apply?

In the Paytm app, search for "Credit Card", choose the Paytm AU card, and complete KYC. Primary cardholders must be 21 to 60 if salaried, or 25 to 65 if self-employed.
